Quiet Luxury
How colours can transform a space.
Revisiting a client’s kitchen space after many years always offers an insightful opportunity. In this particular instance, the goal was not a complete overhaul of the design, but rather a modernization achieved through thoughtful colour selections. The project allowed us to re-evaluate what could be done differently, ultimately focusing on a refreshed aesthetic to bring the space up to date.
The apartment block was originally completed in 2006, and we had installed all the kitchens at that time. During this revisit, the functional footprint of the kitchen and scullery was intentionally maintained, as the original function and ergonomics still suited the clients' needs perfectly. However, the integration of modern technology was key to providing a more seamless design and increasing efficiency within the existing layout.
The most significant change involved a dramatic shift in materials and palette. The original dark grey high-gloss cabinetry and black granite benchtops were replaced with a soft, warm matt grey kitchen cabinetry and a modern porcelain benchtop. This exchange successfully created the calming and comfortable atmosphere the clients, as avid overseas travellers, had desired for their Auckland apartment—a genuine sanctuary of comfort.
Our work extended beyond the kitchen to include a full interior re-paint of the entire apartment. A critical aspect of the project was the imperative project management, as all the work was meticulously completed while the clients were overseas.
The project presented one major physical challenge: installing the 2.8-meter island benchtop. Since the apartment was situated on a cliff face three levels up, using a crane or scissor lift was impossible. A team of eight benchtop professionals successfully navigated the winding staircase to hand-deliver and set the large top into its final position. As a final note of sustainability, the original dark grey kitchen was rehomed and is now being enjoyed by new owners.
